Summer has officially wrapped up and students across Milton are returning to the classroom.

Gormley Looks Forward to Another School Year

The Milton Public Schools begin classes for grades 1-12 on Wednesday, August 31. Kindergarten orientation for students and parents will be on Thursday, September 1, and kindergarten classes will begin on Tuesday, September 6. 

“We’ve worked hard this summer,” said Superintendent Mary Gormley. (Assistant Superintendent) John Phelan, the school principals and department heads have done an outstanding job.”

Gormley said that the district will have 24 new teachers this year, all filling positions vacated by retirements, resignations or leaves. The new teachers had a three-day orientation last week, including working with their mentors and learning about developing classroom climates. 

“Classroom management matters,” said Gormley. “It’s developing a positive classroom atmosphere from day one.” 

Gormley also welcomed several new members of the administration, including Milton High School Principal Dr. Joseph Arangio; Collicot Principal Janet Sheehan; Director of World Languages Martine Fischer, and Director of Pupil Personnel Services Karen Clasby. 

“We’re looking forward to an outstanding school year,” Gormley said.

will begin on Wednesday, August 31 for students in grades 1-8. Orientation for the Early Childhood Center will be on Thursday, September 1, and ECC classes will begin on Tuesday, September 6.

Milton Academy Student Plays Basketball in Russia

Milton Academy junior Ikemefuna “Ike” Ngwudo spent two weeks in Russia this summer, playing basketball. Ngwudo was one of 20 high school players selected nationwide for the trip to Moscow and St. Petersburg. 

“The trip was an amazing experience,” said Ngwudo. “It was exciting to visit all the historical sites and to meet so many Russian basketball players, including members of their national team.” 

The trip was sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, USA Basketball and the U.S. Embassy in Moscow. 

Pre-K Openings Available

Milton High School’s Child Study Pre-K program still has a few openings for afternoon sessions on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The program meets from 11:30 a.m. – 2:10 p.m. and costs $1,000 for the school year. Contact Eileen Mullen at 617-696-4478, extension 5513 for more information.
