A visit from the Cardinal, plus MCAS results made news in Milton's schools this week.

St. Agatha School Celebrates Anniversary
In celebration of 70th anniversary, Cardinal Seán O’Malley, Archbishop of Boston, presided at a Mass at St. Agatha church on September 21. Following the Mass, the Cardinal visited classrooms in the school, where he spoke with students and teachers and greeted parents.

MCAS Gains for Milton Elementary Schools
Three Milton elementary schools have been commended by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in recognition of the most recent MCAS scores. , and schools were among only 127 schools recognized across the state. Collicot and Tucker were recognized for high growth, while Glover was recognized for narrowing proficiency gaps and exiting the 2010 No Child Left Behind accountability status. In addition, all of the subgroups and the aggregate made Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) in all elementary schools and at . The subgroups at did not make AYP, but the school did make AYP in the aggregate.

According to an email from Superintendent Mary Gormley, MCAS data will be presented at the next School Committee meeting, scheduled for Wednesday, September 28 at 7:00 p.m. in the Milton High School library. Parents and guardians will receive their children’s individual MCAS scores in the mail from the Milton Public Schools in October.

Eighth Grade Information Night
There will be an 8th grade information night at Milton High School on Thursday, October 13 at 6:30 p.m. in the Charles Winchester Auditorium. Families of prospective freshmen are encouraged to attend.

Collicot Closet Sale
The Collicot PTO will hold its annual Closet Sale on Saturday, October 1 from 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. at . Donations of gently used books and children’s clothing will be accepted on Thursday, September 29 from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m. and on Friday, September 30 from  9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. at Cunningham Hall. All Closet Sale proceeds will go to the Collicot PTO to fund enrichment programming for Collicot students.

FAVA Offers Art Classes
FAVA (Friends and advocates of the Visual Arts) is once again offering after-school art enrichment classes at Glover and Cunningham/Collicot schools. For information on course offerings, registration and fees, click here for Glover and here for Cunningham/Collicot. All classes are open to all elementary students in Milton, regardless of the school they attend.
