Joe Manning Honored for 65 Years of Town Meeting Service

The name M. Joseph Manning is well-known to many across the Commonwealth and specifically right here in Milton. With a long political career, esteemed service to the U.S. Marine Corps in World War II and even a park in his name in East Milton Square, Joe Manning is a true Milton icon.

On the opening night of Town Meeting, May 7, 2012, exactly 350 years to the day of Milton’s first Town Meeting, Manning was honored.

This year not only marks a milestone for the town, but one for Manning’s tenure as a Town Meeting member. He has been part of Milton Town Meeting for 65 years, the longest term of any current Town Meeting members.

As part of the historical recognitions on Monday, Moderator Brian Walsh as well as State Rep. Walter F. Timily and State Rep. Linda Dorcena Forry honored Manning. The members of the House of Representatives followed Manning, who represented Milton in the House for 28 years.

“We thank you again for your dedication, your commitment to this community that you love called Milton,” Forry said.

Manning was given declarations from the Massachusetts House of Representatives and Senate.

“I am honored for this recognition of my service to this honored body over these past few years,” said Manning, which was met with a chuckle from the audience.

In his remarks, Manning also recognized the significance of the date and location, First Parish, of Town Meeting.

“To be singled out at this historic occasion, in this historic church is most appreciated by me,” Manning said.
