Memories, Photographs Unite Milton Community

Milton had an impressive turnout at last weekend's Mass. Memories Road Show, an event that collected images for a statewide historical database.

Nearly 200 Milton residents gathered to share their history—both from the distant and recent past—at the Mass. Memories Road Show at th on May 12.

The event collected 336 images and 42 videos for the statewide digital archive based at UMass Boston. Attendees were invited to bring up to three items from long ago or more recently that highlighted their lives.

The event was attended by 179 people and run by 46 volunteers from Milton and the Road Show itself. The gathering was an opportunity for residents to catch up and share according to Suzette Standring, the secretary if Milton’s Mass. Memories Committee and representative from the Friends of the Milton Public Library.

“It was a true meet-your-neighbors event where old memories were shared,” said Standring. “Some people took hours to pick the perfect three photos to be recorded.”

Heather Cole, University Archives and Special Collections for UMass, pointed out that Milton had the second highest attendance of the Road Shows thus far, finishing behind Waltham. Milton also digitized the third highest number of photos at one of the events.

With an impressive turnout and contribution, Milton is seemingly well represented in the historical archives of Massachusetts.

For Standring the event will say something about Milton to future generations. “One hundred years from now, researchers might say, ‘These people really cared about each other,’” Standring said.

The images and videos collected in Milton will eventually be added to the searchable database, which can be found at http://www.MassMemories.net.
