Milton Interfaith Clergy Association Recognizes MLK Scholars

Two Milton High students were selected to attend a summer seminar on diversity.

Monday’s of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was about the life and legacy of a revered civil rights leader, but it was also about celebrating diversity and starting a dialog, here in Milton.

One of the ways the Milton Interfaith Clergy Association cultivates this celebration of diversity throughout the year is through the MLK Scholarship, which is given to two students every year.

This year’s winners are Aria Perkins and Mona Yuan.

The two students wrote essays about King and were given the opportunity to read those essays at Monday’s event. Yuan was unable to attend, but former winner Phillipe Janvier read her piece.

The MLK Scholars program sends two Milton students to a weeklong seminar at the Boston Center for Community and Justice every summer. The summit of area students allows for a dialog about diversity. The Milton students then bring the knowledge they gained back to the Milton Public Schools.

“I love it because when our students come back, they come back challenged,” said Yolanda Beech, Milton High School Vice Principal. “They come back to make an impact at Milton High School.”
