Milton Legion Baseball Sneaks by with 2-1 Win

Jack Colton's homerun in the third inning gave Milton Post 114 the win over Parkway Post 78 on Wednesday.

Despite struggling to put together a string of hits that turned into runs, Milton Legion Post 114 beat Parkway Post 78, 2-1 in a late season American Legion baseball contest on Wednesday at Cunningham Park.

A third inning homerun from Jack Colton, which brought in Mike Bortolotti was all Milton needed to take and keep the lead. The Milton batters continued to connect throughout the game, but Colton registered the only RBI.

Even following the runs, Mike Muse and Matt O'Neill knocked singles, but their efforts were followed by a pair of outs.

Milton coach Pat Bryan chalked up the low score to a solid full-game effort from Parkway pitcher Jake Mulry.

"That kid pitched pretty good and kept our guys off balance," Bryan said.

In the final inning, Milton nearly scored again with three deep balls to centerfield, which were all snagged for outs. James Eckel, Bortolotti and Colton all consecutively got a hold of Mulry pitches before getting caught.

Parkway made the game interesting in the fifth inning after three consecutive singles put a run on the board. Prior to the hit streak, Matt McDougall held Parkway in check, seeing no more than four batters in each inning.

With two runners on base, Parkway attempted back-to-back squeeze plays.  Both runners were called on strikes, giving Milton a two out advantage after being stuck in a no out, two-on bind.

"I don't know exactly what he was trying to do there," said Bryan of the opposing coach. "I've never seen that in my life."

McDougall kept his composure and got the next out before Cody Clark took over in the sixth inning.

"Cody Clark came in and did what he had to do," Bryan said of his closer who retired six straight batters.

Milton Legion Post 114 began a two game stand with a tough Weymouth team on Thursday. They will play again Friday in Milton. While Milton has locked up a playoff spot, Weymouth is battling to stay alive.
