MILTON, MA — With Massachusetts on pace for one of the warmest January months in history it may be tempting to jump at any sub-freezing temperatures to fit in traditional winter activities such as ice fishing and ice skating. But Milton officials are warning residents that Turner Pond is off limits no matter how cold it gets.

Due to an underground spring that feeds the pond, while it freezes in some spots quickly, it freezes unevenly and includes thin spots even when temperatures get very cold. Because of that, the ice on Turner Pond is off limits to people and pets at all times.

Residents are asked to keep both children on pets off the ice after multiple reports of dogs needing to be rescued after falling through the ice in New England ponds this week. This past weekend, an East Greenwich firefighter was bitten in the face by a dog he was attempting to save. The firefighter union said the firefighter will require plastic surgery.
