Milton Police Send Fourth of July Message with Classic Cruiser

For the second straight Fourth of July weekend, the Milton Police Department rolls out its cruiser from 1985 to remind residents to have a safe weekend.

Going into the Fourth of July weekend, which many associate with celebration, Milton Police Chief Richard Wells wants to remind people to be safe. He's sending out this message with two electronic signs and an eye-catching piece of Milton PD history.

One of these signs was placed in East Milton Square, while the other is at the . On the lawn of the Highland Street building sits a former police cruiser, which was refurbished in 1995 by former Chief John Lank.

The model was used by the department from 1975 to 1994, said Wells, and the Crown Victoria on display was made in 1985.

Whether the car is a piece of nostalgia from the 1970s or a vague memory from early 90s, it's appearance over the past two Fourth of July weekends is intended to catch people's attention.

"We want people to have a great time, but be cognizant," Wells said.

Wells' caution relates to all facets of celebration. He reminds people not to drink and drive, to wear seat belts and to wear life preservers on the water, among other things.

Wells said the classic cruiser has bounced around town since Lank rehabilitated it. It was at the station for some time before settling at the DPW yard for the past year. The car occasionally is used in parades and for other events.
