Milton Resident to Run the Boston Marathon to Benefit Spaulding Rehabilitation and Marathon Survivors

Greg Gordon is running the Boston Marathon for Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital as part of Spaulding’s Race for Rehab Boston Marathon Team.  Greg is raising money for an organization that helped so many of the Boston Marathon Bombing survivors.

On April 15, 2013, Greg, like everyone around the world, was shocked by what had occurred at the finish line of the Boston Marathon.  He was attending Spaulding’s annual Marathon party at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel on Boylston Street.  He was there with his wife and children supporting friends who were running on Spaulding’s team and witnessed first-hand what took place.

Greg says, “After what happened and what I saw, I knew I had to run this year’s race.  I just knew I had to participate and make that left hand turn from Hereford onto Boylston Street.”

Greg is an experienced runner, having completed over fifteen marathons, including seven at Boston.  Greg also helps organize the Milton Foundation for Education’s annual Monster Dash event and kids’ race. While each marathon is unique, Greg knows this year’s race will be different, “I honestly don’t know what to expect on Marathon Monday.  There’s going to be so many different emotions throughout the day, for sure.  All I’m really hoping for this year is to enjoy the experience and finish with a smile.”

Greg also knows first-hand the importance of Spaulding’s work, as his younger sister, Nicole, suffered a traumatic brain injury eight years ago and required extensive rehabilitation during her recovery.  “I understand the value of a rehab and how it can affect a patient’s outcome”, he says.

When asked how his training has been affected by this year’s cold, snowy winter Greg laughs, “It’s been really tough… I’ll be honest.  But, everyone in New England has been dealing with the same thing.  So, I can’t complain too much about the weather.  Though, it is getting to be a bit much when you hear about a possible Nor’easter during the last week of March.”

With a chuckle Greg adds, “I really lucked out by deciding to buy my very first treadmill in the fall.  With the all the ice and snow, as well as battling though some nagging injuries, I think I’ve ended up running more in my basement than I have outside.”

When applications for this year’s marathon became available, there was no doubt in his mind that he wanted to run and that he wanted to run for Spaulding, “I’m proud to represent Spaulding and support all their good work.”  Adding, “And I’m looking forward to running down Boylston Street on Patriot’s Day (hopefully in front of my friend Terry Kelly).”

Greg has a goal of raising $7,500 for Spaulding.  He’s also organizing an A Cappella benefit concert for Spaulding at Boston University on Friday April 4th 7-9pm.
