Milton Sets Deadline For May Town Meeting Warrants

Warrants for the May 4, 2020 town meeting must be submitted to the Milton Select Board by Jan. 8.

MILTON, MA — Warrants for the May 2020 Milton town meeting are due Jan. 8. The Milton Select Board voted unanimously to accept the deadline during its Wednesday meeting.

All petitions for articles to be included in the warrant for the annual town meeting on May 4 must be submitted on or before Jan. 8 to the office of the Milton Select Board on at Milton Town Hall.

Milton’s town meeting has 279 members. Approximately 25 representatives are elected in each of 10 precincts for three-year terms; and the precincts elect one-third of their representatives each year. Town Meeting is the legislative body of the town to establish an annual operating budget and to consider amendments or revisions to town bylaws or policies.

The town meeting arrant is a notice containing the time, place and agenda for the town meeting. Each item of business to be discussed is presented in the warrant as a separate and distinct article. The warrant is distributed to every household in town four days before the town meeting.

The select board prepares the town meeting warrant, with articles to be considered. Individual voters, property owners, town agencies and the Select Board may submit warrant articles. A written explanation or justification accompanies each article. The warrant committee recommends for or against articles, giving reasons for its recommendations.
