Students At Milton Academy Hold Protest Over Racial Concerns

Students at the school and some alumni say the school is not doing enough to address racism at the private institute.

MILTON, MA — Students at the prestigious Milton Academy walked out of class Monday and held a sit-in at the administrators' office Tuesday in a move to protest acts of racism at the school and a lack of action by officials.

High school students at the school tell the Boston Globe that the years-long problem has resulted in racial slurs towards black students, hate-filled letters sent to teachers of color, and pictures on social media that mock black and Asian students.

More than 100 alumni signed a letter criticizing the handling of the issue.

In a statement to the Globe, Erin Berg, a spokesperson for the school, said, “Milton Academy’s administration is engaging with students and faculty in productive discourse and action, addressing the critical and challenging topics of identity, inclusivity, privilege, and race. This work is all aimed at ensuring a school culture true to Milton’s mission, in which all individuals feel safe, heard, valued, and supported."
