NATICK, MA — Natick public works crews were responding to two major water main breaks Wednesday morning following a wave of frigid temperatures that lasted into the early morning hours.
According to the Natick Public Works Department, a 10-inch main broke along Byron Road off Route 9, shutting off water to about 14 homes. A second 6-inch main broke along Fairview Avenue affecting 17 homes, the department reported.
DPW said service should be restored in both areas by the afternoon.

In general, frigid temperatures can cause pipes to become more brittle, making it easier for them to rupture. A water main rupture in Boston on Tuesday shut down a downtown street for more than 12 hours. On Wednesday, crews in Worcester shut down part of a main street in the downtown area due to a break.
