Edgy Comedienne Sandra Bernhard at TCAN 10/17 and 10/18
The actress and comedienne will bring her new one-woman show "Sandyland" to the Center for Arts in Natick (TCAN) for two nights, October 17 and 18.

With irreverent in-your-face satire, actress and comedienne Bernhard has dominated the comedy scene since her award-winning performance in Martin Scorsese’s The King of Comedy. Successful Broadway runs and recurring roles on shows like Roseanne and The L Word have made her a household name; her cynical take-no-prisoners attitude pioneered a confrontational comedic style previously unheard of in women. She is currently touring with her latest one-woman show, “Sandyland.”
In this exclusive interview with TCAN, Sandra discusses her love for Boston and what comedians she loves. Visit the TCAN website for more information and to purchase tickets for her October 17 or October 18 show, both at 8 pm.
Q. How does Sandyland differ from your past shows?
A. All of my shows reflect the times and keep evolving as I try to do as an artist.
Q. You've been critically acclaimed for your performances in TV and film. What's different for you when it comes to live performances? Do you prefer being in front of a crowd or a camera?
A. You only get one chance in front of a live audience. It keeps you sharp and in the moment, there's nothing better.

Q. Boston is thrilled to have you back, or at least pretty close to city limits. As a city, we're all big fans. What makes the Boston area unique to you?
A. I have spent many great times in Boston, from shooting a film there in the late 70's to many performances. It is an artistic and musical city that is vibrant and yet filled with great American history. Boston is always exciting and beautiful.
Q. What can the audiences in Natick expect from your two shows?
A. A wonderful mix of stories, reflections, outbursts, and music with my fabulous pianist Michael Harren.

Q. We are a nonprofit arts organization, devoted to making the arts accessible to everyone. What role has the arts played in your upbringing and development? When did you know that you wanted to be an entertainer?
Q. If you weren't being an entertainer, what other profession would you be?
A. An open heart surgeon.
Q. Are there any musical artists you're listening to or being inspired by these days? How about any new comedians?
A. I tend to go back to the classic musical influences in my life: Joni Mitchell, Laura Nyro, Nina Simone, Dusty Springfield. As for comedians, Lily Tomlin, but I love all of the new ladies too -- Amy Poehler, Kristen Wiig, Rebel Wilson, and Melissa McCarthy.
