Kindred Hospital closed on June 26 after MetroWest Medical Center ended its Natick lease.

“MetroWest, our host hospital, decided to go in another direction that they thought best met the care needs of the community and chose not to renew the lease with Kindred,” it was announced in a press release. “We explored several options to move Natick to another location, but determined it was not feasible. We are confident that we will continue to serve the community through our other Kindred hospitals in Boston, Stoughton, and Peabody and our additional lines of service.”

But the closure meant layoffs for the 60-person acute care hospital. Layoffs are targeted, but the Boston Business Journal reported that Amber Hester, CEO of Kindred Hospital Boston North, confirmed that nearly half of the Natick employees found jobs at other Kindred locations.

The hospital told the BBJ it is working with employees to find placement.

Also as a result, the hospital has stopped accepting new admissions, but offered its patients in need of continued care an opportunity to transfer to another provider.

“This decision has no impact on our other area Kindred hospitals or nursing centers,” said the release. “During the transition, we will continue to provide our patients with care and services and tend to their medical needs. We will take every step necessary to help our patients relocate, including arranging for transfers and paying for any expenses.”
