Mass. Is 4th Most Energy-Expensive State: Study

Massachusetts is third for the price of electricity, and seventh for the price of oil.

MASSACHUSETTS—Prompted by President Donald Trump's recent announcement of efforts to export more coal and expand nuclear energy as part of his "America First Energy Plan," the personal-finance website WalletHub conducted an in-depth analysis of 2017's Most & Least Energy-Expensive States.

For a better understanding of Americans’ energy costs relative to their location and consumption habits, according to the report, WalletHub’s analysts compared the average monthly energy bills in each of the 50 states and the District of Columbia using a special formula that accounts for the following residential energy types: electricity, natural gas, motor fuel and home heating oil.

  • 3rd – Price of Electricity
  • 10th – Price of Natural Gas
  • 15th – Natural-Gas Consumption per Consumer
  • 18th – Price of Motor Fuel
  • 7th – Price of Home Heating Oil
  • 6th – Home Heating-Oil Consumption per Consumer

According to WalletHub, in the U.S., energy costs eat between 5 and 22 percent of families’ total after-tax income, with the poorest Americans, or 25 million households, paying the highest of that range.
