NATICK, MA — The local Sound and Spirit chorus ensemble has canceled a series of concerts set for this weekend at Natick's Walnut Hill School over concerns about the spread of the new coronavirus, COVID-19.

The ensemble, which includes adult and children singers, was set to perform the concert "LIFT" on Saturday and Sunday.

"In light of the newest guidelines of all public health agencies and local authorities, we are concerned about the health and safety of our members and our audience. While we tend to believe 'the show must go on' ... we are canceling to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and because it is the right thing to do," the group wrote in a statement.

The Sound and Spirit cancellation is one of dozens happening as coronavirus spreads across the U.S. Harvard University and Amherst College have both called off the spring semester, and Boston Mayor Marty Walsh has said that the Boston Marathon and Red Sox opening day could be next.

Natick is also one of a handful of towns in the area with a coronavirus infection. On Sunday, the health department confirmed that a parent of two Natick High School students tested positive for the virus. As of Monday, 41 people in the state had tested positive.

Sound and Spirit said that it was still working on how to wrap up financial commitments like tickets. But it's still possible the show will go on a later date, the group said.

"We appreciate all the hard work you have put into this concert, and we are SO sad not to celebrate with you this weekend," the statement said. "We will be considering all ways to produce this concert in some form once the health threat has subsided."
