MASSACHUSETTS — In a development that will shock everyone across the region, rain is expected in the Northeast this weekend.

Unfortunately, it's more than just an average low-pressure system: a potential Nor'easter is brewing. This could result in flash flooding and coastal overwash, according to Accuweather.

The National Weather Service in Boston hasn't issued any weather alerts yet but forecasts that "widespread rain" and "gusty winds" will roll in Friday night.

Then it will stick around all day Saturday, with a 75% chance of rain much of the day throughout Massachusetts. Sunday will still see lower chances of rain.

Chances of strong winds are high as well, especially Saturday night into Sunday. Boston could have maximum gusts of 30 mph, and Cape Cod is forecast for gusts up to 37 mph.

This weekend's storm is "likely to evolve into a potent nor’easter and produce a zone of heavy rain, strong winds and building seas,” according to Accuweather.

The worst effects of the storm are anticipated to be north of New Jersey and Pennsylvania with New York City and southern New England on the southern edge of the heaviest rain.

The possible nor'easter has evolved from Super Typhoon Bolaven, which crossed the Pacific Ocean last week. Over the weekend, the typhoon collided with another weather system off the Pacific Northwest, a combo that will push the jet stream's cold air south.

As it moves, it'll pick up moisture and move toward the Carolinas, and then track north, according to AccuWeather. This creates the recipe for a potential nor'easter, classified as a strong storm that tracks up the Atlantic coast and intensifies near New England with strong winds out of the northeast.

Another stormy weekend is nothing new for the region. Since July 1, New York City and Boston have received about 175% of their historical average rainfall, Accuweather reported.
