WATCH: Natick Students Break 'Stick Bomb' World Record

Natick students have apparently broken the stick bomb world record. And what the heck is that?

NATICK, MA—Setting up more than 700 popsicle sticks in the Natick High School gym on Tuesday, students set out to break the Guinness World Record for a "stick bomb." And they think they've done it.

On Monday and Tuesday, Junior Matthew Walak and 25 other Natick High School students spent two days setting up 70,000 sticks to build a stick bomb. A stick bomb, according to a spokesperson from the school, is a weave of popsicle sticks in which the removal of one stick causes a chain reaction of sticks relieving their tension by flying into the air in spectacular fashion.

Not only did they set out to break a record, but the event was used to benefit local charities. Donors were given the opportunity to sign sticks that were incorporated into the 70,000 sticks that were used. The team of students raised more than $3,000, and 100 percent of funds raised will be split between the Natick Service Council, A Place To Turn and the Disabled American Veterans of Massachusetts.

A stick team won the world record on June 6, 2015 with 31,370 sticks. The record was cracked in 2016 by a group from Austria who set off 40,910 sticks.

More than 65,000 sticks fell in the NHS gym on the June 6, presumably the new world record. Though the record is still to be confirmed, students counted the sticks after the event with witnesses on site to confirm.
