We are truly becoming a digital society. As an estate planning attorney, I always recommend that my clients keep their documents organized so that when an incapacity or the inevitable happens, their "helpers" (e.g. trustee, personal representative, power of attorney agent, etc.) can locate the information they need in order to take care of things - without having to turn the house upside down searching for information. The following article has suggestions on what to do with passwords: http://bit.ly/1cJPTC8 . Whatever you end up doing with your passwords, research and pick the most viable option for you, make sure that you feel it is safe enough, and please, please put it (or leave instructions on where you keep it) in a location that those who need to find it, can. Putting it in a "safe location", so that even you can't remember where you put it, doesn't help anyone.
