A switch-hitter must choose whether to bat left or right handed at the start of an at-bat but can switch once after the first pitch if desired.

Today's #WordOfTheDay "switch-hitter" was selected because the one offered by Oxford Dictionary, "doppelgänger", had been used before. The rule imposed on us is to always use a word we have not officially used before.

It is okay if we already know the word, but should find a substitute in the event the dictionary (not having the same rules) gives a duplicate.

"Switch-hitter" seemed to have a nice potential association with "doppelgänger" so there you are!
