Alleged Shoplifter, $1,400 Lost in Scam: Needham Police Log

January 27
10:30 a.m. - A resident of Sunset Road told police that he was selling an item on Craig’s List and was contacted by someone who said he was interested in buying the item. He was sent a check which was written for $1,400.00 more than the cost of the item. The sender claimed the check was sent by mistake and asked that it be cashed and the balance wired back to him. Two days later, the check bounced and the caller cannot be located.

10:00 a.m. - An officer on selective enforcement in the area of Highland Avenue at West Street observed a white pickup truck failing to display an inspection sticker traveling northbound on Highland Avenue. The vehicle was stopped and after further investigation, it was determined that the operator of the motor a vehicle, a 37-year-old male from Medford, was operating the motor vehicle with a suspended license. The operator was cited for the offense and he was advised that charges will be sought against him. The operator stated that he understood. A licensed operator then drove him and the vehicle from the scene.
12:00 p.m. - An officer was dispatched to a Trader Joe’s on Highland Avenue for a report of shoplifting. Upon arrival, the officer spoke to the reporting party, who stated that he observed an older gentleman take items from his basket and place them in his pocket. The reporting was advised that he can submit a no trespass order and give the Police Department a copy. The reporting party stated that he would. After speaking with the suspect, he stated that he did not take anything and that he is being falsely accused. The suspect was advised that the business does not want him to return to the premises and that he has been no trespassed from the business. The suspect stated that he understood.
