
Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly on Thursday, Feb. 2 recognized Needham resident Devin Smith, vice president and general counsel of EMD Serono, as one its 2012 In-House Leaders in the Law. Honorees are nominated by their colleagues, clients and other legal professionals for their outstanding professional accomplishments.
As vice president and general counsel of EMD Serono Inc., Smith is responsible for managing the organization's U.S. legal affairs. Previously, Smith was associate general counsel for the Neurodegenerative Diseases and Rheumatology Therapeutic Area. He joined the company in 2006.
Prior to EMD Serono, Smith worked at Nixon Peabody LLP, an international law firm, from 1999-2006. As a partner at Nixon Peabody, he represented emerging and established life science, information technology and manufacturing businesses. Earlier in his career, he was employed as counsel for NEC Technologies.

Smith received his bachelor's degree in political science from the University of North Carolina, and his Juris Doctor from Suffolk University Law School, where he graduated cum laude. He is a member of both the Massachusetts and Illinois Bars.
