Care... From the Heart, LLC Helps Families Decide if a Loved One Might Need At-Home Care

Janez Hicks, of Care... From the Heart, LLC, lists tips for determining if it is time for at-home assistance for an elderly loved one.

Recognizing the signs that an elderly loved one may need assistance in the home can be difficult for many people. In order to help families assess if their loved one needs at-home care, Janez Hicks, of Care... From the Heart, LLC, a home care service agency specializing in elder care, lists the following three tips:

No. 1: They have stopped eating well. “You might notice that there is food spoiling in the fridge, or that your loved one has lost some weight,” said Hicks. “They might also be having trouble cooking. There are tell-tale signs, such as scorched pots.”

No. 2: Personal hygiene starts to fail. Family members might start to notice spots on their loved one’s clothing or that clothes haven’t been changed or even begin to smell. “You should also ensure that your loved one is clean, bathed and brushing their teeth,” added Hicks.

No. 3: Forgetting everyday tasks. This can include forgetting to pay bills, taking medications, missing appointments, not locking doors, etc. “Your loved one might be overwhelmed with keeping track of everything. You may notice that their routines have become more difficult for them,” concluded Hicks.

According to a report from the World Health Organization, the global population of people aged 60 years and older will more than double, from 900 million in 2015 to about 2 billion in 2050. If a family has not yet had to deal with providing elder care, it is likely they will have to in the future.
