Conversion Therapy Ban Signed Into Law
Rep. Garlick, MA House Voted For Ban Last Month
Along with her colleagues in the Massachusetts House of Representatives, State Representative Denise Garlick (D-Needham), Vice Chair of the House Committee on Ways and Means, welcomed the news that legislation that to prevent healthcare professionals from engaging in “conversion therapy”, including practices that attempt to change an individual’s sexual orientation or gender identity, had passed into law.
“Discrimination has no place here,” said Representative Garlick. “Massachusetts has always been a leader on LGBTQ+ rights and I am proud today that we continue to carry the mantle forward. Alongside my colleagues, I was proud to vote for this bill to ban conversion therapy in our state, and I believe that the passage of this legislation into law will protect and preserve lives.”
According to the American Psychological Association, conversion therapy “may pose serious risk of harm,” such as “confusion, depression, guilt, helplessness, shame, social withdrawal, and suicidality”. Violation of this law would result in a healthcare provider being subject to discipline from their appropriate licensing board, including suspension or revocation of their license.
