Direct Federal Credit Union Launches Direct Impact Checking: Turning Everyday Spending Into Community Impact

New Checking Account To Support Four Non-Profits: PFLAG Greater Boston, SAFE Coalition, The Ellie Fund and Raising A Reader Massachusetts

(Direct Impact Checking Debit Cards)

Needham, MA, September, 2026
Direct Federal Credit Union is redefining what it means to make an impact through everyday banking with the launch of Direct Impact Checking, a new purpose-driven checking account that gives members the opportunity to support causes they care about simply by using their debit card with no cost to the member.

For over 73 years, Direct Federal Credit Union has served people who live, work, worship, or go to school in Norfolk County or Middlesex County, Massachusetts. Created for consumers who want their financial choices to reflect their values, Direct Impact Checking brings banking and community impact together, allowing everyday purchases to help support four Massachusetts nonprofit organizations PFLAG Greater Boston, SAFE Coalition, The Ellie Fund and Raising A Reader Massachusetts.

“People make choices every day about where they shop, what they support and how they spend their money. We believe banking should be part of that conversation,” said Kristen Johnson, Chief Experience Officer, Direct Federal Credit Union. “Our new Direct Impact Checking program gives our members a simple way to turn everyday spending into meaningful support for organizations doing important work all across Massachusetts, at no cost to themselves.”

For decades, Direct Federal Credit Union has maintained that being a strong financial institution means being an active partner in the communities it serves. Through long-standing relationships with organizations including PFLAG Greater Boston, SAFE Coalition, The Ellie Fund and Raising A Reader Massachusetts, Direct Federal has supported programs that create meaningful, lasting impact for individuals and families. Through the program, Direct Federal members can select the participating nonprofit they want to support. As members use their Direct Impact debit card, their everyday spending will result in a donation from Direct Federal to the member's selected cause, creating a new connection between financial activity and community impact.

The four nonprofit partners represent a diverse range of causes and community needs:

·PFLAG Greater Boston supports the LGBTQ+ community, families and allies through education, peer support, and advocacy while working to create more inclusive systems.

·SAFE Coalition provides compassionate, judgment-free education, support, and resource navigation for individuals and families impacted by substance use disorder and mental health challenges, with a focus on prevention, recovery, and community resilience.

·The Ellie Fund provides essential non-medical support services to breast cancer patients and their families, helping ease the everyday burdens that can accompany treatment and allowing families to focus on healing.

·Raising A Reader Massachusetts works with regional organizations to help parents and young children develop shared reading habits that build vocabulary, language skills, and the foundation for reading success.

“We are proud to partner with four organizations that are making a big difference in the lives of Massachusetts residents,” added Johnson. “We’ve had an incredible relationship with these organizations over the years. Together, we’re showing that banking can be about more than where you keep your money, it’s banking with a purpose.”

Direct Impact Checking reflects a broader shift in consumer spending, particularly among younger generations who increasingly look for businesses and financial institutions to demonstrate a meaningful commitment to their communities. Recent data from GivingTuesday Data Commons and GoFundMe shows that up to 70% of Gen Z adults have participated in some form of philanthropy that recently outpaced older generations in sheer participation frequency.

Rather than requiring members to make an additional donation or take an extra step, the Direct Impact program is designed to integrate impact into something members already do every day-use their debit card. Every purchase becomes an opportunity to make an impact. The program also gives members the ability to choose the cause that means the most to them, putting the power of community impact directly in their hands with no additional costs involved.

Direct Federal will track the program's community impact and share updates as participation grows, including money generated, account growth, cause selection and stories from the organizations and communities benefiting from the program.

“Community impact doesn't always have to start with a major donation,” said Danya Raphael, Vice President, Brand Experience, Direct Federal Credit Union. “We are giving our members the chance to make a difference with everyday purchases.”

Direct Impact Checking is available through Direct Federal Credit Union. Learn more about Direct Impact by visiting, www.direct.com.
