Did you know that there once were 32 knitting companies in Needham? The legacy of Needham's knitting industry can be seen throughout the town. Most town residents remember Carter's on Highland Avenue. The streets of Horace, Roscoe, William, John and Frank, near where Central Avenue meets Webster Street, were named for Carter's sons. Thorpe Park and Moseley Avenue also bear the names of knitting mill owners.
Chaim Rosenberg, a Needham resident, has written a wonderful overview of the impact these knitters had on Needham in his new book "Knitters of Needham."
Dr. Rosenberg will be at on Saturday, May 12 from 10 a.m. to noon to sign books and answer questions about this important part of Needham's past.
