Needham Historical Society's Annual Meeting and Dinner

Join the Needham Historical Society for its annual meeting and dinner.  This year they are commemorating the tercentennial of Needham’s founding, as well as the 150th anniversary of the start of the Civil War. Special guest Dr. Daniel Breen (Newbury College) will speak on “The Scandalous History of the 29th Massachusetts Regiment.”

The 29th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry was formed in the early months of the Civil War, made up largely of men of proud Yankee heritage – old-line Protestant families who could often trace their lineage back to the Mayflower.  Imagine their chagrin when they were assigned to the mainly-immigrant Irish Brigade, as its only non-Irish regiment…

Daniel Breen received his BA in History at the University of Wisconsin, and his Ph.D. in 2003 from Boston College.  He also has a law degree from the University of Georgia.  He has been a professor of History at Newbury College, in Brookline, since 2005, and is currently at work on a book on the tumultuous political atmosphere of early 19th century Boston.
