Roger Swain from Victory Garden fame to speak at the Beth Shalom Garden Club

Roger Swain to speak at the Beth Shalom Garden Club May 20 at 7 PM.  Known as “The Man in the Red Suspenders,” Roger was the host of “The Victory Garden” on PBS for 15 years, becoming America’s most popular male gardening personality.For 15 years Roger planted and pruned, harvested and chatted with PBS viewers across the country. More recently he co-hosted People, Places and Plants on HGTV.  A writer and science editor for Horticulture Magazine, Roger has written five books including “The Practical Gardener.”Roger earned a PhD. from Harvard University in biology, and received the American Horticultural Society Award For Writing in 1992 as well as being awarded the Massachusetts Horticultural Society Gold Medal for his ‘Power To Inspire Others’ in 1996. He also received the Alice Milton Award for Design in 2012 from the Worcester County Horticultural Society.When he is not filming, writing, or meeting with gardeners across the country, Roger Swain can be found at work in the orchard and gardens of his farm in Southern New Hampshire. Swain tends apple trees, 25 kinds of grapevines and myriad vegetables at his farm in Newton Highlands, N.H. He also likes kumquats, but doesn’t grow them. Instead, he attends the annual Kumquat Festival in Dade County, Fla., a state he fell in love with while visiting the Everglades as a college student in 1968.
