On the first day of the workshop, Plugged In teacher, bass player and environmental activist, Greg Reinauer, will speak to students about LowRes. Greg's band, Melodeego (which means Music in Action) has been raising money and support for the bike powered sound system. Melodeego's goal is to empower a generation into action towards a fair, lasting future for all.
Later on the first day, the songwriting students break into groups, led by Plugged In teachers and Melodeego band members, and write songs based on their reactions to what they have learned about LowRes and/or on any subject of their choice. Students participating in the location recording workshop, held during the same time as the song-writing workshop, will learn from a professional sound engineer about the equipment and set up techniques used in live recording.
On the second day, a recording is made of the students performing their original songs. The location recording students will assist with the recording. A CD is created of these performances, and proceeds from the sale of the CD are donated to LowRes. Song-writing students also perform the original songs at the concert on January 14 and January 16.
The workshop is open to all kids ages 10-18.
Song-writing experience is not required.
Plugged In is a non-profit program teaching kids how to be in rock bands and about the importance of giving back to the community. Three times a year, Plugged In has benefit concerts and the students vote to choose the charitable organization for which the concert will raise money. Plugged In is about bringing young people together through music, teaching them the importance of using their music to make positive change in the world, and helping them gain self-confidence.
