Summer of the Sequels
Film Festival
This summer we will be showing a twin bill of sequels to classic Disney animated films. Movies will be shown starting at 2:00 PM, with a ten minute break between each film, in the order listed below:
July 29th
Bambi 2 - 72 minutes
The saga begins soon after Bambi's mother has died--and for viewers who shudder at the thought of having to relive that traumatic movie experience, you won't. With gentle inferences to her passing, Bambi is left to the clumsy-though-well-meaning care of his father, the Great Prince who faces the difficult task of raising a son while silently mourning his own loss. Yet the weighty subject of death is soon overshadowed by the wonders of forest life. Through skillful storytelling, the film takes an early turn toward levity. After all, its spring and Bambi's familiar friends, Thumper and Flower, are ready to play. Especially charming are the scenes where the forest animals give each other lessons in bravery and soon have a chance to test their mettle in scuffles with a newcomer to the mix, a blustering bully named Ronno.
101 Dalmatians II: Patch’s London Adventure -
70 minutes
Patch, the TV-obsessed pup of the 1961 animated original, becomes a star in this sequel when he sneaks off to audition for his favorite show, Thunderbolt. Meanwhile, the ego-driven canine star learns that his character is about to be killed off. His solution? Be a real-life hero. Patch, with his encyclopedic knowledge of Thunderbolt episodes, prowls the streets of London with his idol, making disastrous attempts to rescue unsuspecting citizens. Cruella De Vil returns, on probation for her earlier misdeeds, but still determined to steal the puppies. She springs old cohorts Horace and Jasper from jail and adds artist Lars to her arsenal. What results is a blend of the animated original's coziness with the live-action version's slapstick, wrapped up with a high-minded ending in which Patch teaches his hero what it means to be genuinely heroic.
