  • Why go: Whether you mourned the closure of the Bowlaway in April or are just now hearing about the local candlepin bowling alley, which reopened last month, this is a great opportunity to check it out. Now with new —Zach and Taryn Sundberg—the Bowlaway will be having its grand opening this weekend, with half-price bowling and shoe rental all day Saturday, from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. This family-friendly event will also feature kids’ activities such as balloon animals and face painting and a raffle.   • Pricing: Usual rate is $25/hour per lane, pro-rated and $4 for shoe rentals, but all prices are cut in half during the grand opening

  • Why go: Shop from a variety of wares from New England crafters, artisans and farmers including homemade crafts, soaps, baked goods, popcorn, teas, annual plants and produce. The event supports the Massachusetts Horticultural Society.
  • Pricing: $6 adults, $4 or MassHort members, $2 for children ages 12 and under

3. Artists’ Reception at Art Emporium

  • When/where: , 32 Chestnut St.; Saturday, Aug. 6, 1:00-4:00 p.m.
  • Why go: Area painter Rose Siersdale will again showcase her work at the Art Emporium in Needham throughout the month of August. Meet the artist and get a look at her work during the opening reception on Saturday. For information, visit artemporium.us or call the Emporium at 781-449-6722.

  • Why go: Show off your baking skills and bring a batch of unique cupcakes to compete against other local bakers for various prizes. 5. Take Advantage of a Museum Pass

  • Where/when: Passes available through the to Boston Children’s Museum, Concord Museum, the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston and several other sites; passes can be picked up after 1:00 p.m. the day before the visit or by 11:00 a.m. that day.
  • Why go: With rain in the forecast for both Saturday and Sunday, it could be a great time to go to an area museum. Check ahead of time to reserve a pass with your Minuteman Library Card to get into museums around the area for reduced admission. Go to the Needham Free Public Library Web site for more information and to view passes by location or by the date you hope to visit (some passes are limited to certain dates).
