- On this day in 2008, J.R.R. Tolkien’s heirs filed a $150 million lawsuit against New Line Cinema. The suit alleged that New Line Cinema, which produced Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings on film, failed to pay them their proper share of the films’ collective gross. The parties settled out of court.
