Buildings Evacuated After Gas Leak At Needham Nursing Home

Two buildings housing over 100 people at the nursing home were evacuated.

NEEDHAM, MA — Over 40 people were evacuated from a building at a local nursing home Monday morning after a snowplow struck a gas meter and caused a leak, fire officials said. Another 90 people were also evacuated from the adjacent building.

Around 9:30 a.m., emergency personnel were called to Wingate Senior Living Community at 235 Gould Street. Several ambulances were called, and Needham fire along with the nursing staff, worked to evacuate over 100 residents from the two buildings. No injuries were reported.

“Our staff responded quickly and with the utmost attention to the needs of our residents. I am so proud of our Wingate team and caregivers for handling the situation as they did,” Wingate Healthcare's COO Jill Bosa said.

Eversource shut off gas and made repairs to the meter. Gas dropped to low enough levels for residents to return to the nursing home. Bosa said it took about 90 minutes to get all residents safely returned to their apartments.
