Home Maintenance To Do's for the month of January

While the cold weather will keep most of us indoors in the comfort of our homes, a few simple tasks will ensure a warmer and safer winter.

New England winter has arrived bringing sub-zero temperatures and snow storms. While the cold weather will keep most of us indoors in the comfort of our homes, a few simple tasks will ensure a warmer and safer winter. If you find you do not have enough time to complete the tasks below, check out the service offerings at THE HOME CUSTODIANS and we will gladly complete them on your behalf.

Our top JANUARY HOME MAINTENANCE TASKS as follows:

  1. Set your programmable thermostat to 69 degrees. Lower temperature settings will save you a few dollars. Also, running the system frequently will ensure any quick temperature drops do not freeze your pipes.
  2. Keep all room doors open to allow for proper air flow and heat distribution.
  3. Buy ice melt. Rock salt is cheaper but is corrosive, calcium chloride is is good for wood, decks, and cemented walkways.
  4. Buy winter snow shovels.
  5. Make sure you have a reliable snow plow contractor.
  6. Reverse your ceiling fans. Run the fan’s blades clockwise direction to produce an updraft and push heated ceiling air down into the room.
  7. Check the house for unwanted cold drafts (basement, attic, doors and windows) and insulate as needed.
  8. Check roof and gutters for ice dams.
  9. When taking a winter vacation, ask a friend or neighbor to check on your home for any winter or cold weather damage (inside and out).
  10. Make a worst-case scenario plan including contact information for maintenance professionals.
