Home Maintenance To Do's for the month of March

With the worst of winter's biting cold and snow mounds behind us, a few simple maintenance tasks and checks will get your home in shape.

March and warming temperatures are knocking on the door. With the worst of winter’s biting cold and mounds of snow behind us, it is almost time to step outside in the fresh air and prepare for spring. From the top of your house to the foundation, a few simple maintenance tasks and visual checks will get your home in shape. If you find you do not have enough time to complete the tasks below, check out the service offerings at The Home Custodians and we will gladly complete them on your behalf.

Our top MARCH HOME MAINTENANCE TASKS as follows:

  1. Inspect the roof for damaged shingles/flashing, chipped/missing mortar, and leaks. Check the attic for damp spots or drips.
  2. Check the eaves for rotting wood or peeling paint and examine the siding for damage.
  3. Check the house foundation and basement for damp spots.
  4. Clean gutters of winter debris.
  5. Check and clean outdoor light fixtures.
  6. Check the water meter and plumbing for leaks. The most common leaks are around toilets, faucets, base of the water heater, lawn irrigation systems, and cracked exterior pipes.
  7. Check the sump pump for proper operation as rapid snow melt may cause flooding.
  8. Have an HVAC company service the air conditioners.
  9. Change the HVAC (air handler) filters.
  10. Close the fireplace damper to prevent drafts, rainwater, or animals from entering your home.
  11. Check your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and replace the batteries as needed.
