Log: 'Your Grandson Needs Money' Scam Hits Needham

The Needham PD supplied the following information. Where arrests or charges are mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction.

Tuesday, Sept. 2

  • At 8:37 a.m., police responded to a report of a car off the road on Hunnewell Street and into a telephone pole. The operator was cited for multiple offenses

Wednesday, Sept. 3

  • At 9:20 a.m., police responded to South Street for reports of a car crash. The car had gone off the road and damaged a utility pole and a stone wall. The driver was issued a citation for failure to stay in the marked lanes
  • At 11:35 a.m., police responded to Central Ave. for a report of a two-car crash. Needham Fire brought one person to Beth Israel for evaluation. Both cars were towed from the scene.
  • At 1:30 p.m., a resident of Laconia, NH, reported that she was visiting a friend on Garden Street and backed into a parked car while leaving.
  • At 1:40 pm., a resident on Otis Street reported a scam. The resident said that he got a call from someone claiming to be his grandson. The caller stated that he was arrested out of state and needed money for the bail. This money was placed on a Green Dot card. After making a few calls, it was determined that the grandson was ok and never arrested or out of state.
  • At 1:45 p.m., a resident on May Street reported that his house was egged
