Meet the Artist: Needham Dentist Creates Piece for Adirondack Project

Patch profiles the creative minds behind the Needham Merchants Association's Adirondack project.

The Needham Merchants Association's brings together local artists, businesses and organizations in an effort to draw more people downtown and encourage them to shop local.

Placed throughout downtown Needham, each Adirondack chair has its own theme and was painted by a local artist. The chairs will be auctioned off at an event in September, with proceeds to benefit town beautification projects and local students.

Needham Patch will be profiling some of the artists behind these creations throughout the summer. Today, we chat with Needham dentist/artist Kathleen Hoye, whose chair can be seen at Perennial Designs.

Title: "Odonata"
Artist: Kathleen Hoye

Find it at: Perennial Designs, 117 Chapel St.

What was your inspiration for this piece? I wanted a somewhat summer theme, and dragonflies typically remind me of summer. It was a fun coincidence that their order was named "Odonata"—which is also derived from the Greek word "odontos," meaning "teeth"—because I am a dentist.

What is your background as an artist? I am a 1990 graduate from Rhode Island School of Design, where I majored in illustration. I also have BS in biology and a doctorate in medical dentistry.

What is your medium of choice? I like to work mainly in acrylics or watercolor.

Where can someone see more of your work? I don't have that much extra time for art these days; I work full time, own two practices and have three young children. However, if someone would like to pay me millions for a piece, I would sacrifice some day hours.
