Needham HS Student Attends 2018 Advocacy Summit in Washington, DC

From Save the Children Action Network: Sameena Ghogawala, a sophomore at Needham High School, participated in the 2018 Advocacy Summit organized by SCAN, Save the Children Action Network. March 18-20, she travelled to Washington D.C. and joined 232 advocates from 30 states to tell our members of Congress to invest in kids, to fund early childhood education, global maternal and child health and to support the Reach Every Mother and Child Act.

The efforts of the advocates combined with hundreds of phone calls, tweets and emails from other activists paid off. Congress increased funding for Head Start and Early Head Start. They nearly doubled funding for high-quality childcare assistance for middle and low-income families. And Congress even increased funding for maternal and child health programs overseas.

Because students like Sameena advocated at the Summit, and with support from local representatives like Joseph Kennedy, more kids across the country will start kindergarten ready to learn. More parents will be able to work without worrying that their kids are in substandard childcare. More moms and kids around the world will have the chance to survive and thrive.
