Needham Library Celebrates Harry Potter's Birthday [VIDEO]

Kids enjoyed cake, wand-making and other Hogwarts-inspired activities on Wednesday, July 13.

Arriving at the on Wednesday afternoon, children discovered a makeshift Platform Nine and Three Quarters where they waited to be ushered into the community room for a celebration in honor of boy wizard Harry Potter's birthday.

Organized by children's librarian Elaine Garnache, the afternoon included table after table of crafts and activities based on the famous book series by J.K. Rowling.

First, everyone picked the name of one of Hogwarts' four houses—Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff and Slytherin—out of a Sorting Hat, then they spread out to select and decorate wooden wands, make wizard hats and explore the various "classes." At Care of Magical Creatures, kids could make their own beasts out of modeling clay. At Divination, they could choose a prophecy from a crystal bowl. At Charms, they tied colorful feathers to fishing line, making it look as though the feathers were levitating.
