Needham School Enrollment Continues To Rise

NEEDHAM, MA — As Needham continues to be a desirable place for education, enrollment numbers at the schools continue to go up.

As of October, the Needham Public Schools have 5,665 students, according to data released by the school district. That's higher than last year's 5,588 and above the projection of 5,632 that was given last year.

At the high school, enrollement continues to up, increasing from 1,659 to 1,685. The high school, where an addition and renovation is slated to take place next year, is expected to see more students, higher class sizes, and larger teacher workloads.

"As the enrollment at Needham High School continues to rise, so too does average class sizes and teacher loads. Staffing increases over the last couple years have helped to mitigate those increases to an extent. The high school will continue to see enrollment increases in the coming years, which will require further staffing increases to maintain appropriate class sizes and a full complement of course offerings. As we continue to grow in all areas, NHS will remain a vibrant place to learn and grow for our students, and we will continue to meet our students’ needs with instruction that is engaging and personalized and class offerings that are diverse and robust," Needham High School Principal Aaron Sicotte wrote in a memo to Superintendent Daniel Gutekanst.

On the middle school level, the High Rock School has 450 students while 854 seventh and eighth grade students make up Pollard Middle School. The average class size for grades six through eight is 20.01.
