New Hillside School Could Open a Year Early

Needham, MA — A new Hillside Elementary School could open a year earlier than expected.

Originally set to open in September 2020, the school could be constructed and ready to be used by September 2019, according to the Needham Times. Superintendent Dan Gutekanst said an accelerated scheduled would save the town money.

Before committing to an accelerated schedule, the Massachusetts School Building Authority must approve the schematic design and funding agreement. If approved, the MSBA would agree to fund a 30 to 40 percent of the $64 to $67 million project.

The MSBA is planning to vote on July 20.

For the project to move forward, the proposal must pass town meeting and a debt exclusion vote.
