Police Reports: Woman Lied About Being Behind the Wheel

The following information was supplied by the Needham Police Department. Any charges mentioned do not indicate a conviction.

A Needham woman who was cited for failing to yield at a stop sign, resulting in a crash, was later found to have lied about being the one behind the wheel.

Police responded to a two-vehicle crash at Great Plain Avenue and Broad Meadow Road on Friday, March 9 at around 3:53 p.m. No injuries were reported, although the vehicles' air bags were deployed. The woman, a 63-year-old Needham resident claiming to be the operator, told police that her vision had been impaired by sunlight and that she hadn’t seen the oncoming vehicle, taking a left turn onto Broad Meadow Road and crashing into the car, according to reports.

A few hours later, police learned that the woman’s husband, a 66-year-old Needham resident, had actually been behind the wheel, according to reports. The woman had allegedly lied because her husband’s license was restricted.

The man was summonsed to court for operating a motor vehicle on a public way without an ignition interlock device, and the woman was summonsed for allowing operation of the vehicle.

iPhone Stolen from Student’s Bag
A high school student reported that her iPhone was stolen from her bag while she was at practice on Wednesday, March 7. The student told police that while she was in practice her bag was outside in front of the school. The matter is under investigation.

NHS Student Caught with Marijuana
A student was allegedly caught with a bag containing a small bottle with marijuana on Wednesday, March 7. The student was cited for possession of less than an ounce of marijuana.

Vandalism at Newman
Police responded to the report of vandalism at on Friday, March 9. A maintenance worker reported that boards leading to an old dock at the rear of the school, along with a metal chair, had been tossed into nearby water.

Car, Cash Stolen From Vehicle
A vehicle on Frank Street was broken into overnight between Thursday, March 8 and Friday, March 9 and a camera and cash were stolen. The vehicle had been left unlocked in the driveway between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. The resident said he had not heard anything suspicious during that time, according to reports.

Fight on Franklin Street
Police were called to a Franklin Street business on Friday, March 9 around 3:30 p.m. for the report of a fight in progress. The two parties were separated before police arrived. Both were advised that they could seek complaints through Dedham District Court.

Driver Cited for Having Altered Inspection Sticker
A 52-year-old Dracut man was stopped in Needham on Friday, March 9 for having a loud exhaust system on his vehicle and was also found to have an altered inspection sticker. The driver was pulled over on Highland Avenue near May Street at around 4:49 p.m. The man was summonsed to court for both violations.

Pollard Student Cited For Marijuana Possession
A 14-year-old student was caught with a small amount of marijuana on Monday, March 9. The teen was cited for possession of an ounce or less of marijuana.

High Street Apartment Broken Into
An apartment on High Street was broken into on Friday March 9 and a laptop computer and change were taken.

A High Street resident called police around 9:36 p.m. after returning home to find that the front door on his first-floor apartment had been pried open. The resident said that when he had left the home at 7:15 a.m., the deadbolt on the back door had been locked but that it was unlocked when he returned. Police are investigating.

Break-in Reported on Highland Terrace
Police were called to a Highland Terrace home on Friday, March 9 for the report of a past break-in. There was no sign of forced entry. A neighbor reported seeing a suspicious person in the area earlier in the day, according to reports.

Needham Couple Discovers Tax When Filing Taxes
A Cleveland Road resident reported on Saturday, March 10 that they had been the victims of fraud. The couple discovered the fraud when they attempted to file their taxes this year. The IRS informed them that their filings from the prior year appeared suspicious and their ability to file this year was put on hold, according to reports.

DVD Player Missing
A Seabed’s Way resident reported on Saturday, March 10 that a DVD player was missing from her hall closet. Nothing else appeared disturbed.

Jewelry Taken From Greendale Avenue Home
A Greendale Avenue resident reported a past break-in on Saturday, March 10. The homeowner said that sometime between March 8 and March 10 someone had entered his home and taken some jewelry. Nothing else was disturbed, and there was no sign of forced entry, according to reports. The matter is under investigation.

Underage Drinking Reported on Hillside Avenue
Police responded to the report of underage drinking at a Hillside Avenue residence on Saturday, March 10 at around 9:50 p.m. A neighbor had broken up the party before police arrived. Officers planned to follow up with parents the next day.

Dropped Cell Phone Leads to Marijuana Citation
Police were called to a Yurick Road residence on Saturday, March 10 at around 11:20 pm. for the report of an underage drinking party. When police arrived, numerous kids were seen fleeing from the scene and running across the lawns of nearby properties.

A responding officer found a cell phone on one of the lawns. The owner of the phone was located and found to have marijuana in his possession. The individual was cited for possession of an ounce or less of marijuana.
