NEEDHAM, MA — Offensive and racist graffiti was discovered inside a Mitchell Elementary School bathroom, Principal Gregory Bayse confirmed.

The Boston Globe reports that the graffiti was removed immediately after it was reported, but it is likely that it was seen by other students, Bayse said.

“First and foremost, I want to clearly state that racist comments — in fact, any derogatory comments regarding an individual’s race, religion, sexual orientation, gender, or nationality — are not tolerated at the Mitchell School and are grounds for disciplinary action, up to and including suspension,” Bayse said in the statement.

Second through fifth grade students spent part of Wednesday in assemblies about the consequences of disrespectful speech. All grades will also participate in conversations to make sure their actions make everyone at the school feel welcome and safe.

School officials and staff are scheduled to meet Sept. 25 to discuss the efforts.
