*The 9th seeded Needham HS Field Hockey Team went on the road to play #8 Concord-Carlisle in the 1st Round of the D1 North Sectional Tournament today. The game was as evenly matched as you would expect from an 8 vs 9 match-up. The 1st half saw CC control the ball, but the Rockets counter-attack was just a strong. Needham turned away at least 7 corners from the Patriots, and BSC MVP Allie Brinkhaus came close on 2 shots, but missed just wide on both. The 2 teams went to the half tied 0-0. The 2nd half was more of the same, great scoring chances for both teams, but the each respective defense stood up to the challenge. The Rockets thought they broke through with 10 min left when Ally Hickey put one in the top corner, but the refs waived off the goal.
Regulation ended scoreless and the teams went to sudden death overtime, which is a 7v7 Format. With a wide open field, both teams looked tired, but fought on. The first 15 min overtime period went by without a goal and the two teams went to a 2nd OT. Early on, Needham faced a 7 on 2 corner from CC, but Senior Captains, Dana Campbell (GK) and Regina Longley (D) teamed up to turn them away!
In the final seconds of OT #2, Needham had their own 7 on 2 corner, but Hickey’s shot went wide and they moved on toPenalty Shots (Best out of 5).
Needham won the coin flip and deferred.....
