School Committee Contemplating Pre-Labor Day Start for Future School Year
The committee recently looked at two proposed calendars for the 2017-18 school year.
Needham, MA — The 2015-16 school year is just about over and that means that the school committee is looking down the road at future years.
During a recent school committee meeting, Superintendent Daniel Gutekanst revealed two options for the for 2017-18 school calendar. One with a start before Labor Day and one with a post-holiday start.
In the pre-Labor Day calendar, staff returns on Aug. 29 and school beings on Aug. 31. Kindergarten starts on Sept. 1, with the preschoolers coming to school on Sept. 5.

If there are no snow days, the last day is June 13, or June 20 if all five built in days are used.
In the post-Labor Day start, the staff returns on the same day, but the students don’t return until Sept. 5., but the students start on Sept. 5, kindergarten on Sept. 6, and preschool on Sept. 7.

The last day would be June 15 with no snow days and June 22 with all five.
The school committee will vote on which calendar to use at a later date.
