TripAdvisor To Lay Off 200 Workers
The Needham based company is cutting hundreds of jobs as competition from Google heats up.

NEEDHAM, MA — TripAdvisor, based in Needham, is planning on eliminating 200 workers. The layoffs come as the travel giant faces pressure to cut costs and juggle an intensifying competition against Google.
According to Bloomberg News, who first broke the story, the company had over 3,800 staff at the end of September. A layoff of 200 workers would be about 5 percent of the company's total workforce. The outlet said TripAdvisor is focusing on reducing and re-allocating expenses. Google's new travel search tool has also put pressure on the company.
The Google tool adds its own reviews of hotels, restaurants and destinations. TripAdvisor plans to reinvest savings money into media advertising, most likely to compete with Google.
