WATCH: Needham Teacher Jams With Students From A Distance

When a student told her teachers her violin string broke, not only did her teacher come to fix it but they tested it out with a jam session.

NEEDHAM, MA — Needham students are getting used to online learning but some thing still need a teacher's touch — in the case of one Needham middle schooler, it was a broken violin string. Teachers and staff from two different Needham public schools worked together to get the student her new string and fix her violin.

Nandita Rao is a seventh grader at Pollard Middle school and has been practicing the violin alongside her other school work, until her string broke. When Pollard Middle School teacher Mr. Smith and principal Ms. Bibbo heard about her situation they hunted down new strings and enlisted the help of Eliot School music teacher Mr. Vallantini to deliver them to Nandita.

Once Vallantini restrung Nandita's violin, the only thing left to do was test it out. The testing quickly turned into an impromptu, socially distanced jam session. Nandita's father strummed the guitar while her second grade brother Akhil played the tabla.

Nandita's mother Smriti Rao told town officials how thankful she was for the teachers and their joyful spirits. "Some of the most fun we've had in a while, and we owe it all of the wonderful teachers at NPS who made it possible," said Smriti.

The town included the jam session in its Facebook roundup of inspirational stories amidst the coronavirus crisis.
