What Should be the Name of Needham's New Elementary School?

NEEDHAM, MA — It's been a long time since Needham had to name a new school but that's the situation the School Committee faces with the recently approved school to be built on Central Avenue.

Chairperson Susan Neckes told the Needham School Committee at a recent meeting she would like to see a new committee formed with a mission to recommend who the school should be named after.

"What we were thinking, given that this is something people care about and is going to be around for awhile, we should have a process and committee and be thoughtful and come back with some recommendations," Neckes said.

The group hasn't been put together yet, but Neckes said she would like to see a couple of school committee member, teachers, administrators, and parents from Needham as part of the 10-person committee.

Commonly called the New Hillside School Project, the current Hillside School will retain the name, Neckes said.

The school committee is expected to return to the issue at the start of the new year.
