2. Nightly Road Closures Hit 3 New Bedford Streets Through August (wbsm.com) — Nightly closures are coming to Route 18, Purchase Street, and County Street in New Bedford starting this Sunday, running 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. into August for Route 18 rehabilitation work. Drivers, especially evening commuters, should expect detours near the work zone while MassDOT crews install steel beams.
3. New Bedford Recall Law Proposal Sent to State House (wbsm.com) — New Bedford is moving closer to adopting a recall process for local elected officials, with a Home Rule Petition now before the state legislature. The proposal, reshaped by the City Council from Mayor Jon Mitchell’s original version, sets high signature thresholds and timing limits for launching recalls, aiming to protect voters while allowing removal of truly rogue officials.
4. 3 men charged after New Bedford officers hit by fireworks (wpri.com) — Three New Bedford police officers were hit by fireworks during a disturbance at Monte Park following Cape Verdean Independence Day festivities, leading to charges against three local men. Police say new body-camera and video evidence shifted the most serious assault charges from one suspect to another, and one man was also arrested with a loaded handgun.
5. New Bedford's Zeiterion theater wins major preservation award (southcoasttoday.com subscription) — New Bedford’s Zeiterion Performing Arts Center has earned a major preservation award from WHALE, capping a sweeping restoration that honors the theater’s historic character. Fresh off reopening in January, The Z now offers upgraded accessibility, new lounges, classrooms, and rental spaces, reinforcing its role as a central gathering place for arts and community events downtown.
