New Bedford Man Sentenced in Gomes Killing Case (wbsm.com) — A New Bedford man has been sentenced to 10 to 12.5 years in state prison for his role in a 2023 shooting that killed 20-year-old Lorenzo Gomes in the city. Prosecutors detailed how ShotSpotter alerts, city cameras, phone data, and surveillance video helped New Bedford Police track the suspects and secure convictions in the case.
   

2. Mayor: New police headquarters in New Bedford could come together in the next few years (wpri.com) — City leaders are advancing plans for a new, purpose-built New Bedford police headquarters at 360 Coggeshall Street, projected to cost $80–$100 million over four to five years. The facility would replace the current former-grocery-store HQ and North End substation, aiming to improve safety, holding space, and long-term service for residents.
   

3. Healey awards millions to schools in New Bedford, Taunton to expand technical education (wpri.com) — New Bedford’s public and vocational high schools are getting millions in new state grants to expand career and technical education programs and modernize equipment. The funding is part of a $70 million statewide package that will add thousands of CTE seats, preparing local students for in-demand careers in trades, health care, engineering, and more.
   

4. Worst Air Quality in Massachusetts Revealed by Study (wbsm.com) — New Bedford residents are part of Bristol County, which earned a “D” for ozone pollution in the American Lung Association’s 2026 State of the Air report, tying with Dukes County for worst in Massachusetts. The study warns that about 170,000 kids statewide breathe unhealthy air and highlights serious health risks from fine particle pollution linked to sources like wildfires, power plants, and diesel engines.
