NEWTON, MA — Three major elementary school projects are moving toward completion, according to the city's Comprehensive Capital Project. One is slated to open its doors as early as the start of the next school year.

The Horace Mann, Countryside, and Franklin school projects all remain on schedule and on budget, marking a key stretch in Newton’s long-running school construction effort.

Horace Mann at 225 Nevada St. is expected to reopen for the 2026-27 school year following its significant additions and renovations. According to the city, work on the exterior plaza and basketball court is continuing, playground preparations are underway, and windows and masonry are nearly complete. Inside the building, drywall, painting, tile, and casework are all in progress.

Franklin and the new Countryside Elementary Schools are on nearly identical timelines. Both schools are expected to open to students in winter 2027, followed by demolition of the old buildings and construction of new play fields, with full project completion expected in summer 2027.

Countryside is located at 191 Dedham St., while Franklin is on 125 Derby St. Countryside first broke ground in May of 2025, and the work is being carried out by CTA Construction Managers.

Newton said all projects have made major construction progress. At Countryside, installation of the geothermal system is close to complete, while exterior masonry and windows are nearing completion. At Franklin, geothermal distribution work has been completed, and stormwater infiltration systems, exterior insulation, masonry, and windows are continuing to advance. The city said interior framing, mechanical systems, and drywall are also underway at both schools, with painting in progress at Countryside.
